A Farewell Of Arms By Ernest Hemingway - 1845 Words

Ernest Hemingway, author of A Farewell to Arms, created a classic but controversial love story banned in Italy as well as parts of the United States, for its candid brutality. While many authors during the Roaring 20s chose to focus on the sacrifices and valor of World War I, Hemingway wrote his novel from a different but realistic perspective. As a World War I veteran himself, Hemingway based his novel off of his experiences in war and from his own life to influence the romantic relationship between Catherine Barkley and Lieutenant Frederic Henry. Choosing to break away from the social norm, Hemingway decided to incorporate literary forms to shed light on important factors individuals during this delicate time period ran from, after a†¦show more content†¦She first handily witnessed as well as suffered through pain, but was willing to assist without wasting any time by claiming that she was not qualified to do help. Critic Robert Warren wrote, â€Å"In this novel she emerg es as the truly heroic figure of the book. A model of courage and stoic self-awareness, Catherine is determined to forge a meaningful and orderly existence if only temporarily in a world in which all traditional notions of meaning and order has been shattered† (Warren, Robert). During the delicate time period of his life where vulnerability was high, he experienced losing a dear one close to him throughout his childhood, his father. He along with many others lost the ones they love to a harsh environment known as reality. Hemingway’s beliefs stated that no one could escape death as nature would destroy all in its path, but one could seek comfort to escape the reality of loss. Through the use of a minor character, Rinaldi, Hemingway was able to depict the sources of comfort individuals turned towards after World War I. Rinaldi, perceived as a competent, good-natured, masculine character who was an unbelievable ladies’ man, was seeking a source of comfort from the countless of wounded men he operated throughout the book, â€Å"This war is terrible, Rinaldi said. Come on. We ll both get drunk and be

Consumer Preference and Willingness System †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Consumer Preference and Willingness System. Answer: Introduction Local production of food is able to generate more income locally along with number of employment opportunity. Most food id produced thousands of miles from where it is consumed needing specific energy consumption for the purpose of managing, storage and transportation and out coming in specific waste of food from spoilage during its journey. It is the report which will be focusing on the Bentley Beverage services which mainly deals in Western Australian premium locally produced products such as food and alcohol. It is a case study analysis in which case study is related to the Australia premium locally produced foods and I will be appointed as a consultant to provide the right guidance for improving the condition of the company. There are so many things which are required to be observed while expanding the business globally (Mugera, Amin, Michael, and Emma, 2017). The main branch of the company is situated in Perth and it has branches now Melbourne and Brisbane as well. It will focus on an improvement in the company by enhancing the productivity of the employee. The situation of BYOD will be discuss and the importance of currency information and really data information regarding Bentley Beverage services. The role of IT services in the company is major and it is vital for the company to give proper attention to this department. The advice and suggestion will be made on various situations which may bring the positive environment within the organization. The business process and management should be proactive and effective so that all the relevant information regarding inventory and data can be collected easily. The current situation of the company presents lack of business process and management. Bentley Beverage Services has expanded its business in effective manner and it is required for the business to have the entire data regarding income and expenditure in relevant manner. Customer representatives are hired as contract basis and they have to investigate about the stock and explore of the demand of the customer by travelling. I have been called in the company as a Consultant and as per my consideration it is important to must have look to the inventory system. As system of company has expanded globally and the services of Bentley is go beyond from locally which is very appreciated for the company. It is required for the company to keep focus on the business process and management for establishing the corrective way for deliverin g the products and managing the stock in various sites such as locally and globally (Carter, Tinggi, Yang, and Fry, 2015). Business process A business process is considered as the collection of the connected tasks which search their last point in the delivery of the products and services to a customer. It is a collection of activities which is necessary for the organization to attain the determined goal in certain period. It is a series of certain steps which is required for the company to b followed. It involves shipping products, updating information of the employee, marketing budget, details of order and invoicing. I would suggest to the owner of the company to apply the certain steps of business process to provide the required information to the customer service representatives. Orders are lodged in a central system but are dealt with locally by the relevant office dependent upon the product. As per my opinion, I would advise to the owner of the company to follow the business process such as a product assembly process, a quality assurance process, an invoicing process and a billing process. To improve the efficiency of the business process, the owner of the company should implement the various tools for resolve the challenges of business process such as management dashboards, verification and error handling, integration wizards and collaboration tools (Van, 2015). Management is the key tool for the growth of the company and I would suggest to the owner of the Bentley Beverage services to adopt the operational and tactical management to handle the different warehouses holding stock and managing order completion. The business has expanded and started to deliver the products globally. Customer service representatives move from one place to another to explore the latest trend of the market (Hammer, 2015). Operations management defines the business practices of administration to build the upper level of efficiency within an organization. It involves the store operation management which is the life blood of the business. The owner of the company should hire the store manager in various departments who should be qualified and able to handle the various details regarding the inventory system so that in the time of requirement real data could be available with pricing details and location. It would be good for the business and able to reduce the piecem eal application. The food products are sensitive and the Bentley produces the local products that is why it is vital for the other stores of the Bentley service to give the proper information about the remained stock and required product so that customer would not go with dissatisfaction. Tactical management is able to allow a manager in a business environment to opt the best strategy or tactics for every situation that rises, rather than following a certain standard procedure. I have analyzed through case study that Customer representatives are required to deal with both producers and sales queries as well as scan the marketplace for new products. The all customer service representatives are situated in the head office of business for maintaining the close relationship with the supplier. Tactical management would be helpful for the business to take step as per real condition because it is the services of food and alcohol which is reliable upon the real situation (Van, William, Jen, and Peter, 2014). Governance involves the rules and policies so I would recommend to the owner for making business policy and laws in an efficient manner. Mobility and BYOD issues The concern of owner regarding mobility and BYOD issues related to security and risk are genuine because the customer representatives were initially employed on a contract basis whilst the business grew which resulted in a BYOD situation. Bring Your Own Device is also called a workforce mobility because it is considered as one of the most complex development due to its introduction of huge risks to data loss and data protection. Although BYOD is eligible to provide the greater flexibility and enhance the productivity along with that it has a specific influence on the IT model. It is an attractive business model but it has numerous risks embedded with it. Owner of the business has the concern about the risk of data leakage, exploits vulnerabilities, mixing personal and business data, poorly cared of devices and IT infrastructure. The workforce of the business has expanded and due to its the floodgates of data leakage and threats may open up. As the Customer service representatives are working in different place and they are connected with mobile phone and tablet (Astani, , Kathy and Mussie, 2015). I would recommend to the owner of the business to execute acceptable policies and procedures that should be able to clearly communicate the boundaries. Owner of the business should offer a secure and reliable internet experiences. The customer service representatives are often travelling and require good mobility and data in real time. That is why it is required for the owner of the business to prevent the data of the business initiate to launch a VPN which permits access that the data being transferred from the mobile device to your IT network is encrypted and permitted. The employees are contract based and they must have been signed thee paper which is addressed the legal terms of the business. Obviously, they are traveling from one place to another that is why they are required the real time data but the concern of owner is correct on his own way. Therefore, the owner of the business should invest in the Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) software so that he makes enable himself to monitor and then detect risks before they have a disastrous consequence (Babich, and Panos, 2015). There is a risk of stolen data and lost employee device. It is necessary that business owner should execute encryptions tactics to make sure that the device is safe and secured against threats. As per my guidance the business owner can execute the capabilities of remote wiping so that IT managers can wipe the device instantly without taking the permission of the users. It would be great helpful for the business in the case of losing device of an employee. Business should make ensure that the data is not only protected but also be conventional to the IT infrastructure. The prior thing owner need to do is bring the full audit of the entire environment of IT in terms to decide whether the infrastructure of the company is set up to cope with workforce mobility or not. The visibility in the network layer should b necessary that is why the capabilities should be reviewed in a better position. These all factors can be accepted by the owner of the company which is able to protect the data of the company and informed to the owner about the activities of the CSR in all over the world. The mobility and BYOD issues can be resolved by applying the suggestion which is given by me. Although BYOD comprises various security risks, if handled in an appropriate manner, a program of BYOD can decrease the cost and enhance the productivity without hampering security. An owner should educate his employee on how to protect their devices from hazardous situat ions. Recommendations to owner for expanding the staff The business has increased globally so owner should hire staff for separate department. It has been studied by case study that there are small numbers of staff have access to all the applications that are utilized including the accounting systems. It defines that business has small number of staff with the responsibility of handling various department. It has been recommended by me to the owner of the company to expand the range of staff so that staff can be divided into the department and the requirement of each department could be accomplished. Staff should be increased as per the requirement of the departments and Bentley food services should distinguish department in the form of IT department, accountant department, human resource department and administration. It would be helpful for the business to protect their business product in better way with specific information. The owner should do not required to accomplish it in wider way but different department would be helpful for d istinguish the services. It will also reduce the burden of the owner and help to provide more safety. Internal controls should be considered by the owner because it facilitates to prevent their assets and reduce the risk of fraud. There are some certain steps which should be implemented by the owner of the company which would be helpful to reduce the risk of fraud and maintain the culture that produces accurate and timely financial information. It is important for the owner of the business to set up the written policy that clearly defines the policy for integrity and ethics. Business owner should consider assessing and possibly revising their policies on annual basis for making changes in the working environment. As now businesss employees are working different places so video conferencing should be handled or done between the business owner and employees. Financial document regarding the business should be managed in an efficient manner and the business owner need to understand that in generating the document related to financial when attesting a tax return, there is frequent an explicit financial statement are required in accurate position. It can be done only due to availability of the accountant department who should have the access to make the financial report of the company by analyzing the various taxes. It has been recommended to the business owner to take proper time to ensure that they are ready with the reporting. Administration department would be helpful to manage the data of the company and can inform prior (Lacity and Peter, 2014). As it is mentioned in the case study that Stock is held in warehousing facilities in each state and products shipped on demand. The owner should give the responsibility to the administration department to handle the information about the stocks which is held in warehouse and inform prior if an ything is required. For making the good arrangement in the context of IT, owner need to hire the It team for managing the various stocks and data of the store at one place by using cloud computing software. The access should be given by the owner of the business to the staff as per the department so that the staff of the business could not get confused and provide relevant information in the time of requirement. It is the model which is helpful to determine the strategy for improving the strategy within the business. it is required for the organization to identify the issue initially after that it is required to analyze. Plan should be developed with an adequate manner after that implement it in the company. Plan should be critically evaluated. Apart from that there is various responsibility of the payroll so it has been recommended to the owner to create the payroll team. It is considered as the biggest expense of the business that is why the owner should pay attention towards it. There are various frauds can be done such as unapproved overtime, unapproved pay raises etc. timesheets should be created and managed in proper manner before paying payroll. The work of payroll is not done with paying the salary to the staff but the staffs of payroll are mingled with other responsibilities such as payment controls (French, Chengqi and Jung,2015). It is necessary for the owner of the business to fo cus on payroll department as well because it will be helpful to reduce the burden of him but the owner of the company should take up to date information regarding every department. If owner manage each department with efficiency, it will bring huge profit in the context of business because everyone in the staff of the business would be responsible for their own work and have access of their department. It will bring thee sequence in the business in which the owner of thee business can easily checkout the various information and provide the real time data to customer service representatives. Management of IT services, cloud or outsourcing Technology is the backbone of every business and manged services are able to move on right strategy. It is important for the owner of ten businesses to manage the IT services and outsourcing in an efficient manner. I would like to recommend them to choose the right provider for the needs of the business. Services should be managed to gain the advantages from outsourcing IT that is control IT success, reduce labor costs, enhance the efficiency and competitiveness, reduce risk and quickly implement new technology. The IT of the business can be outsourced data backup, recovery and storage and data centre functions such as data processing and storage. There is various kind of IT outsourcing which able to offer the number of options when contemplating outsourcing to IT functions. Cloud computing has established a revolution of technology for small business which is able to providing access to a range of capabilities that only for available for the larger companies (Rittinghouse and James, 2016). Owner should manage thee IT cloud computing services as he required and pay for what he use on a basis of monthly such as utility services. Cloud based programs can be used by company at any time on any device with the use of internet connection. It provides the benefit that brings a huge collaboration. A business owner should allow them to do work from anywhere because customer service representatives travel various places to explore the market for bringing the knowledge about the latest trend and the demand of the customer. I would like to recommend that the use of cloud based software brings the collaboration in teams without requiring attachment of e-mail and share the list of tasks from wherever they are. The customer service representatives who are presented in different locations can connect through instant messaging and even appear in the spontaneous meetings with robust audio and web conferencing. Along with that the owner of the business can attend the meetings with various clients and vendors from different location with the help of cloud based services. He can use cloud service for reducing the cost which will be helpful to save money. The natures of cloud resources are elastic or flexible so it would be possible for the owner to enhance capacity to support growth. For instance, if customer of the company need of enhancing collaboration, owner of the company can access collaboration tools hastily without making any plan. The flexibility of the Bentley services enhance when the owner works in the cloud. The business owner should hire the IT team for managing the cloud based software as it is mentioned in the case study that customer service representatives are required data in real time. He needs to hire IT team for handling the software and IT services because it is not possible that he can manage everything on his behalf. They should be managed by providing the entire information about the requirement of the business and the customer service representatives. The owner is afraid about risk and losing data, the staff should have the sufficient knowledge about the handling software so that the fear of owner can be disappeared. They should be managed with various IT outsourcing because it would be helpful for the business to reduce labor costs. Hiring and training a staff cannot be affordable for the small business because it helps to bring the required human resources. IT staff can be able to use the IT outsourcing when Customer service representatives want the data. Pricing models f or IT service outsourcing is different for every country but business owner should make his mind to pay $100 to$150 per month per user. Service operations of the business The service operations are essential process for the company because it has the objective to make ensure that all information and requirements are monitored continuously (Zurich, 2017). It helps to distinguish various events in term to determine on corrective actions. It is the responsibility of the management to restore the services to the earlier stage as soon as possible. I would like to suggest to the owner to focus on food operations and provide efficient services to the customer so that the demand of Australian produce local food can be increased. A food service operation involves a food delivery sales operation, temporary food service operation and vending machine location. It is important for the management of the business and the various department s about the taste and the demand of the customers. As mentioned in the case study that customer representatives were initially employed on a contract basis. It has been recommended by me to the owner to keep focus on various repre sentatives by taking support of IT team and keep in touch with them on continuous manner. I would suggest to owner in the regard of service operations that there are many processes which are the part of the service operation and the owner should consider them appropriately. The owner should make sure that the delivered services as per customer demand are monitored on regular basis. The events are categorized as per the decision making. There should be proper application management so that the various essential applications can be managed throughout their life cycle (Asatiani, Uday, Esko, Mikko and Timo Saarinen, 2015). The current concern of owner regarding the services and the products of the business is correct. He is more concerned about the safety, BYOD issues, mobility and the process of business structure. The owner should focus on corrective form of business process so that all services and requirements can be done in a sequence manner. The service operation of the business should be established appropriately. Service operation contains the effective relationship between employee and the employer. The Bentley food services need to enhance the operational efficiency, capturing new markets and outsourcing. The effective service operations are able to reduce the cost of the operations. I want to advice to the owner of the business to focus on the activities needed to operate the services and eligible to maintain their function ability as per the service legal agreements. The owner should fulfill the request of the services for managing the lifecycle. Owner should provide the right to the user to get access in the data where he can find out the information regarding data and to be able to use a service or group of services. It services should be restore into normal operators as soon as possible for the purpose of reducing the adverse influence on the business operations (Radnor and Nicola, 2016). Problem management is t he element of the service operations which is able to reduce the impact of incidents and issues on the business which can be caused by errors in IT infrastructure. It is the management which can protect the reoccurrence of incidents regarding to the errors. The business value of service operations in the business is higher because it has various features such as reduced unplanned labor costs, quick and effective access to standard services. As per my point of view, the owner of the business should focus o the improvement of the service operations and make the security policy goals and objectives that can be achieved by the employee of the business easily (Lee, 2016). The relationship between IT and administration should be effective and cooperative so that in the time of requirement of specific information about the data and the stock availability. Technical management and operational management both play a crucial role in the maintenance of the IT infrastructure. Bentley Beverage s ervice provides the foods and beverages across Australia s a wholesaler and not the business has spreader so it is required for the owner of the business to increase the products of food as well. Customer representatives need to deal with producers as well as sales queries of the customer and vendor. Conclusion It has been concluded that Bentley Beverage Services can improve their business process and management by adapting the operational and tactical management. It is report which has been made on the concern of the owner about mobility, BYOD issues, poor process and IT arrangements. Business process is a collection of activities which is necessary for the organization to attain the determined goal in certain period. As a consultant I advised to the owner of the business to keep concerned about the process and the management of the business because these are the most important element of every business. BYOD is referred as the Bring Your Own Device which is eligible to provide the greater flexibility. However, it can become the major issue of the business when employee of the company is allowed to use its personal device for accomplishing the task of the company. It is required for the company to put in place the appropriate policies and procedure to handle these issues. Service operation s are the key tool for improving the process and it has been recommend by me to enable service operation and its management in an effective manner. Teen Parenting Essay Example For Students

Teen Parenting Essay Why Teen Parenting Essay should be delayed? Raising a child isnt an easy thing to do. Raising a child while the parents are still in their teens is even harder. Dealing with the day to day chores that involves a baby and trying to work and get an education is very stressful on any teen. Teen Parenting should be delayed because it is very difficult to handle, some cant handle it. One of my friends is a teen mom, and she wouldnt wish a teen pregnancy on any teen. We will write a custom essay on Teen Parenting specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Trying to work, go to school, raise a baby and still having some growing up to do is nowhere near easy. Dealing with a checkbook, a husband, a newborn, a job and finishing school at sixteen was hard. But she managed, just like many other teen moms but she do wish things could have been easier so she could have enjoyed my first born even more, without all the added stress. A teen mom faces more than just the bills and the baby. A teen mom often deals with becoming stereotypical in the eyes of those around her, strangers, friends and all. Many people dont wish to acknowledge the fact that it only takes once to get pregnant, which may very well be the case for the girl in question. Yet many people will look at her as lowly, assuming she got pregnant on purpose and slept around often. Her parenting skills are doubted, even if she follows the most popular of the parenting experts. Closer to home, teen moms have to deal with relationship problems that may not be such a problem for a mom to be who has been in a relationship for a longer period of time. Boyfriends tend to drop out of the picture or promise to be around, only to leave later. Often the mom will realize he isnt the best person in the world to be a dad, so she doesnt push the issue. Child support is a problem, since most young dads, like the mom, are still in school or not making very much at work. There are some great teen dads out there but unfortunately, they are few and far between. If the mom decides to stay with her parents, she deals with relationship issues on this front too. All to often grandparents want to take over. How can they not? Its extremely hard to step back and let your teen parent another child while you know theyre so young, especially if the parenting styles they have arent what the grandparents practiced on their own children. Babysitting, parenting styles, doubting the ability of the teen. All these can truly affect a teen mom in a negative way. Finishing school and working to support a baby is also a big problem. In todays world, a college degree is almost a must for any good paying job. A high school education is even more important. If a teen mom still has to go to school and work, she has very little time to be a mother. The worst part of it all, is that usually, thats what a teen mom really wants to be. Most teen moms dont want to be part of the statistics. They dont want to be looked down on. They do want to take care of their child, or children, in hopes that they grow up to be strong people. They also want to show the world that they can be a good parent. Its just too bad that society doesnt readily give them that credit. .

Gran Torino Movie Analysis Essay Example

Gran Torino Movie Analysis Essay Example Gran Torino Movie Analysis Essay Gran Torino Movie Analysis Essay In the movie Gran Torino, by Clint Eastwood, Eastwood plays a racially bitter and lonely war veteran that doesnt really have a soft side at first for anyone after his wife dead. He treated everyone the same, with a grumpy attitude. He would keep to himself cause he felt it was the best thing of him to recover from his lost. He wouldnt take any hand outs or help from anyone cause he believed he could do it all by himself and didnt need anyone. The movie shows great examples of how he went from a stuck up grumpy old man to a kind hearted caring man in the end. In the movie when Walt (Clint Eastwood) catches Thao trying to steal his car late at night for the initiation because his crazy cousin and friends were trying to get him to be more of a man and be apart of the gang. After Thao was caught and held up by gun point by Walt, he manages to get away. After that the next day his cousin and friends came back around causing problems and Walt comes out and holds them up by gun point to scare them off. Thaos mom felt that Thao had a debt to Walt now for helping him out, so he had to come work for Walt for a little. : Thao would be given asks that would get him dirty and really have to put a lot of energy into. Walt started to ease up on him towards the end because he saw something different in Thao then all the other bad kids in the neighborhood. Another example from the movie is when Sue invites Walt over to a family gathering that they were having. He felt apart of the family because of how he was welcomed in and how comfortable he felt after awhile. From everyone greeting him and from all the food and hospitality that was given on his visit. He really started to click with Sue to a point were Sue could tell that they were becoming close. At this point Walt was starting to become more calm and kind hearted. Walt one day when Thao was in his backyard planting and gardening, they started talking and the point of Thao wanting to make money so he could save up but he wasnt getting paid working for Walt. Walt saw that Thao was good with his hands and took Thao to go get his Job with Walts friend in the construction business. He did him a favor of getting him the Job and buying all the tools that Thao would need to start the Job because he saw Thao as one of his sons. They were becoming close so Walt didnt have a problem doing it. Walts soft side was starting to show. In the end Walt turned out to be a kind hearted old man, he was a little rough at the movie Walt does one last kind gesture for Sue and Thao. He went and confronted the gang, to get them to leave them alone. He went in there knowing it was dangerous and that he wasnt gonna make it out alive so he pretended to pull a gun on the gang so they would shoot at him and go to Jail forever so that Sue and Thao could live in peace finally without worrying about them. Su and Thao were grateful but they were sad that they had to lose a friend for it to happen.

Practice in Turning Adjectives Into Adverbs

Practice in Turning Adjectives Into Adverbs Many adverbs are formed by adding -ly to an adjective. The adverb softly, for instance, comes from the adjective soft. (Note, however, that not all adverbs end in -ly. Very, quite, always, almost, and often are some of the common adverbs that are not formed from adjectives.) Instructions In each set below, complete the second sentence with an adverbial form of the italicized adjective in the first sentence. Example: Original:  Gus is usually a careful driver.Adverbial form: He always drives carefully when children are in the car. When youre done, compare your answers with those below. Practice Exercises We live on a quiet suburban street. Even the dogs bark _____.This is a dangerous road. Were driving _____ close to the shoulder. My friend Alice is a polite young woman. What are the common types of leadership that most organizations now Essay

What are the common types of leadership that most organizations now use - Essay Example This research will begin with the statement that your identity is who you really are—and your image is how much of that real people understand the daunting boundaries of language and culture. The paper tells that corporate image and identity comes hand in hand to make up a desired audience perception towards the corporation. The image and identity that is projected towards the market, most significantly to its target consumers, create a reputation about the corporation that would eventually become the basis of the people’s decision of availing the services of the corporation. Just as any other corporations present in the community, pedagogical institutions are not exempted from this common situation in the community. It is necessary for any organization to project a good image and identity towards the community since it is considered as one of the best strategies that any organization should take into consideration. The present research has identified that leadership fo r that matter plays a detrimental role. As simple as these two ideas may seem yet, in reality, this is one of the most difficult and the most complex challenges that a business may face that concerns management these days. In order to address this challenge, every organization must understand and recognize the important leadership and become aware of which type of leadership will prove to be effective for the organization. ... Corporate identity and leadership digs deeper as to the process and the ways in which the company creates its own value in the community where it markets its products and services (Managing Image in a Dynamic Corporate Environment). On the other hand, corporate image has to do something with the people who had availed of the corporation's products and services, their impressions and associations towards the corporation as perceived through their experiences with the company. Generally, these impressions and association that the consumers have developed within themselves can however be controlled by the corporation. Everything that the consumers have to go through is capable of being controlled by the corporation to a greater or lesser degree. This "may include the tone and manner of its employees, its pricing structure, the quality of its customer service, the publicity it receives from the media, its social responsiveness and its activities in the community" (Managing Image in a Dynamic Corporate Environment). It is and has been conceptualized largely in terms of the visual aspect it projects to the people. In business management studies, they also suggest that leadership style is determined mostly by the organization and is presented to the employees in both verbal and visual form (Moffit & Williams, 1997). Thus by maintaining the most effective type of leadership, the company is assured that the desired reputation of the corporation towards its target consumers is achieved (Managing Image in a Dynamic Corporate Environment).

You have the rights to their current 3 books, do you shoot each film Essay

You have the rights to their current 3 books, do you shoot each film individually or do you shoot all at once to make certain for continuity Discuss Strength a - Essay Example It is a well known fact that "time is money", and since time is saved in this method of filming the series or several of its movies together, it can be said that money is also saved. Furthermore, it is important to remember that in order to execute and commence the production and work on a movie, it is necessary to assemble the crew, and working on a few movies one after another avoids having to find new crew, or contacting the old movies crew to see if theyre available, or even around. Actors tend to be on the move, whether theyre beginners looking for a break, or famous celebrity actors who film movies all over the world, and may be out of the country, working on another movie. Hence, the availability of the crew and actors is very problematic, and can be avoided by filming several movies together. Moreover, filming a series saves some costs. Equipment, settings and backgrounds, as well as arrangements and payments for locations can all be used for more than one movie, especially if its a trilogy or some other sequel series, which presents a continuing plot. These can reach great amounts of money, and using them for all the movies and all at once would result in a substantial reduction in costs, meaning more profits and fewer expenses. First and foremost, it isnt known in advance whether the movie will succeed or fail. Investing resources in each movie can reach millions of dollars and more, therefore investing in a few movies means risking dozens or hundreds of millions of dollars, and if done, there is no guarantee of success. Should the series fail at the box office, the huge amounts of money poured on producing and executing the film will all be lost. Some claim that if the movie, transformed from a book or a series on television, already has a large fan base, the potential of fans going to watch the movie is greater than the risk of losing the money

Cranes Incidences Essay Example for Free

Cranes Incidences Essay Industrial safety is an important component in determining success in industrial operations. It is important that industry players develop their systems in a manner that is appreciative of safety to be in line with legal requirements for industrial operations and also ensure high levels of motivation among their employees. Motivation within any workforce is important in ensuring that operational goals are driven at and is considered a factor that can define organizational propensity to failure. Reputation of an industry entity is placed at risk if it employs approaches to operations that are risky to its workers and even customers. It is thus apparent that industrial entities have a lot to lose should they choose to operate in a manner that does not show appreciation for the role played by safety within their industries in ensuring ethical, legal and successful operations. Despite this knowledge being firmly ingrained within industries, cases of crane accidents have continued to maim and even kill industrial workers. A review of recent cases to determine the causes of the accident and make recommendation on avenues that can be used in addressing this challenge is therefore aimed at ensuring improvement in working conditions for crane workers. Review of Industrial Crane Accidents A shocking revelation in review of existing rules and crane accidents that have occurred in the recent past is that OSHA has not updated its rules for workers who operate cranes for the last 38 years (CraneAccidents. com, 2008). The labor department estimates of the fatalities shows that there are at least 82 cases of crane accidents per year (CraneAccidents. com, 2008). According to the labor department, a majority of the accidents are caused by operator errors and prevailing weather conditions especially wind (CraneAccidents. com, 2008). The differences between the figures reported by the government department OSHA and international unions of operating engineers creates an unclear picture of the extent of the problem. In one of the incidents, a rental crane failed while offloading which led to the death of two workers. The rental crane which is operated by Ocean energy let go of the load that smashed two workers to immediate death (MMS, 2009). Though the accident is still under investigation, preliminary results show that that crane was poorly maintained and the cause are mainly due to mechanical failure (MMS, 2009). Another accident that also involved a rental crane occurred during offloading (MMS, 2009). The accident which led to the death of one worker while leaving two workers with serious injuries was mainly due to poor disassembly of a rental crane (MMS, 2009). The crane incidences which are filled with inhumanity and pain are categorized as either minor or major cases (MMS, 2009. The definition of minor and major is dependent on the number of casualties though their potential for damage and loss of human life is immeasurable. In an incident that happened in Kentucky, a man who was standing next to a HTC-835 crane was dismembered and died one hour later in a hospital when the counterweight came around and struck him in the back (CraneAccidents. com, 2009). The unconscious body as found pinned between a counterweight and a bed of a truck (CraneAccidents. com, 2009). One of the factors that have been cited as having played a role in the incident is the fact that there was no warning tape around the crane (CraneAccidents. com, 2009). Discussion of Causes In the first case poor maintenance of the crane that led to failure is to blame for the incident. Though the potential that cranes have in causing incidents is known, rental companies and even organization can still choose to use cranes that have not been properly serviced. Ignorance is not the case rather irresponsibility by management and worker that leads to use of cranes that could pose danger to human life and even damage property is to blame. Irresponsibility of workers who were casualties in the incident is further brought out if their being under an offloading crane is considered. While working in an environment where crane activity is high one must have heard of incidences where cranes led to loss of lives. Taking heed of danger and appreciation of the potential that cranes have in causing damage would have pushed them into being within what can be referred to as a safe distance. Poor management of the disassembly exercise has been cited as the cause of the second incident. This lives room for a multitude of possibilities which include lack of proper training, poor supervision, lack of preparation and poor or lack of measures that can be used in ensuring that assembly and disassembly processes are carried out in the best way possible (CraneAccidents. com, 2009). Another important factor that should be noted in the second case is the involvement of a rental cranes and issues relating to management and mechanical failure. The third case is different from the others in that the victim and operators were unaware of the risks they were in. Labeling of potential risk has for a long term been used in industries to ensure that people aware of risks they are in. Cranes cause motion or objects that can smash human flesh to oblivion. Lack of a labels or a warning tapes around the cranes or any other moving object in an industrial setting is reflective of lack of appreciation of the potential that cranes have in causing damage to human life and property and lack of strong assessment measures for instance by OSHA to ensure that industrial entities operates within the developed safety framework. Analysis The causes of the accident can be looked at from at least five different dimensions. Irresponsibility, poor assessment systems, poor policy making, lack of appreciation of the potential that cranes have in damaging properties and lives and lastly lack of an effective systems that can develop social awareness on problem thus its address. Irresponsible actions for instance being under a moving crane and using cranes that have not been labeled as potential risks have led to loss of lives. Poor assessment systems are reflected in using cranes that have badly been maintained and making errors in disassembly. While technology and legal implications are changing rapidly to keep in touch with the needs of the society, the last development in OSHA with regards to crane operatives is nearly four decades ago. The relevance of the current policies to modern practice may be missing thus the lack of awareness on legal avenues that can be used in redress. Selecting rental cranes that are in bad shape and using cranes without labeling them all point to lack of appreciation of the potential that cranes have in damaging property and destroying lives. Poor policy making may also contribute to using cranes that are not in good shape and lack of counter measures to ensure cranes used are in good working condition. The expertise, skills and experience of crane operators are important in ensuring effective management of the operations; this must be ensured by all organizations to ensure human error is minimized. Legal measures and guideline like OSHA are also lacking in that the organization could use approaches that are lacking in safety and even lack labeling despite its potential risk yet remain operational. This is further brought out by the difficulties that victims face in seeking illegal interventions (CraneAccidents. com, 2009). Summary OSHA is not enough in reducing prevalence of the crane accidents. Though effective legal intervention measures can reduce and even force industrial entities to put in place effective safety measures, development of an appreciation of safety is vital to ensuring that measures are put in place. The current OSHA policies have to be reviewed to ensure they are up to date with the legal and technological factors that affect crane operations. Developing awareness on rights of crane users and highlighting the accidents will also play an important role in ensuring that industrial entities are wary of incidences. By developing awareness and helping victims seek legal redress, OSHA will ensure that organizations are aware of the negative image that can be developed by crane incidences. Responsibility is a personal issue that must be spread to all in industries. Safety training for workers would ensure that they seek their right to work in safe environments and develop awareness on risks presented by the environment they are in. It is only after appreciation of risk has been developed that effective programs can be developed.

The Fourteenth Amendment Essay -- Racism Equality Constitution Essays

On a date that will be remembered forever as a step forward for our nation, July 28, 1868, the Fourteenth Amendment became part of the U.S. Constitution. The Fourteenth Amendment gave a new sense of hope and inspiration to a once oppressed people. It was conceived to be the foundation for restoring America to its great status and prosperity. The Amendment allowed â€Å"equal protection under the law†, no matter what race, religion, sex, sexual preference or social status. It was designed to protect the newly freed slaves. However, it only helped the white race. Congress passed the Fourteenth Amendment not knowing how it would affect all the other minorities. Minorities were still treated with disrespect and incivility from the white culture. With Americans pioneering westward, they found a strong-willed people with a simple way of life, the Indians. The conquering American pioneers tried to push their way of life upon the Indians. They directed what the Indians should do, what to eat, and whom or what they should believe in. With the Indians refusing this way of life, and the ensuing battles over their land, put up an immensely hard fought battle against the United States Military led by General Custer. General Custer was facing a leader, a holy man, and an impressive war chief who the Indians had great respect for, Sitting Bull. Sitting Bull vowed to eliminate the American invaders, but came to his demise with a shot to the chest and slash to the back of the head by a Ces...

The Oppression of Women as Women

The oppression of women as women PHIL 202 – Assignment 1 26/01/2012 The patriarchal society in which we live has systematically oppressed women for centuries. It is not until extremely recent history, with the Women’s Liberation Movement, that women have been able to take meaningful strides towards a more equal and just society. We have come a long way since that time, women can now vote, work, practice politics and live independently of men: it seems as though we have come very close to the equality that we have worked so hard to achieve. However that statement has proven to be incredibly false. If we examine Marilyn Frye’s metaphor of the bird cage and apply it to the changes that have been brought upon our society we can see how the oppression of women not only still exists, but has gained new dimensions. By inspecting the progress women have made to integrate into patriarchal society we can see that we have succeeded to remove some of the wires that have held us back from escaping the cage, however the removal of these wires has added new responsibilities for the female gender and it is these new responsibilities that have added completely new wires to our cages.By examining Marilyn Frye’s article Oppression we will examine why she believes that â€Å"women are oppressed as women† (Frye, p. 16) and why it is that, even though men face barriers and difficulties, she believes that they are not â€Å"oppressed as men† (Frye, p. 16) Whilst reading Frye’s article I was truly disagreeing with the points she was making. How can she state that men are not also oppressed in some way: they have the burden of supporting their families, they cannot express any emotions without seeming weak, and they don’t have the choice of spending as much time with their children? These facts made me certain that men too were oppressed, however in a different way than women. As I neared the end of the article I came to a sudden re alization: the opinions I had formed were a product of my microscopic view of the situation and I was not able to see that the burdens men faced were only barriers held in place in order to preserve the patriarchal society that has been created and they were not faced with systematic oppression. In order to illustrate this point we can take a look at an example from the side of two opposing genders. The workplace seems to be following the path f equality, even though certain issues remain (men earning more than women on average, men holding higher positions etc†¦) they seem to be miniscule problems compared to the ones faced by the women decades before us. The wire on the cage that we would have named â€Å"ability to pursue a career† seems to be a rusty weak wire that is falling apart, no longer capable of holding women back. It may seem as if this is a victory, however, the oppressing society we live in has ensured that the destruction of that single wire has been ackn owledged and replaced by a new strong and sturdy set of wires in order to ensure systematic oppression. Now that women are able to work they are perceived as lazy and old-fashioned if they don’t, however if they do work they are perceived as being intimidating, bad mothers and sometimes masculine. Therefore it seems as if the situation where a women is perceived as hard-working, intelligent, ambitious and modern as well as feminine and an excellent mother and homemaker does not exist, yet it is actively expected of them; if any of the aforementioned characteristics are not present she will be given a dreadful label by society. It is clear that the advancements we have made have lead to an entirely new dimension of oppression. If we now continue on to examine the role of a man in the workplace we can see that they do face barriers but they are in absolutely no way systematically oppressed. If we examine a single barrier they face, for example, the burden of having to support the ir family, as this is the norm with regards to sex roles. The man must go to work and must earn money to pay the mortgage, to feed their children and to buy his wife the dishwasher she has been nagging him to get. This is a responsibility that he is expected to fulfill, however he is no way oppressed. In order to obtain an adequate job a man may go to school, earn a degree and find a stable and well-paying job. He will find this job with much more ease than a woman with the same qualifications and will get payed more than the aforesaid women. Being a man will be an advantage to his search and will in no way place any obstacles in his way, as opposed to woman whose gender is â€Å"significantly attached to whatever disadvantages and deprivations she suffers, be they great or small. †(Frye, p. 6) By obtaining a job, he has now earned the labels of intelligent, ambitious, and hard-working; of course, in our age and time a woman might be able to acquire all of these labels as well . However the labels describing her femininity and home-life might not be as pleasant. What about a man? He is now supporting his family therefore he is now masculine and worthy, he is also seen as a good father as he is supporting his children (the fact that he might not spend an adequate amount of time with them is of no importance as in our society financial support takes precedent of emotional support. Therefore our society has given him the burden of supporting his family but we can see that this is only a barrier put in place in order to for men to be able to exclude women from political and economic life and therefore control it. It may be a disadvantage in some ways, however it is important to recognize that it is a necessary disadvantage in order to maintain control and can in no way be labelled as oppression. The simple term â€Å"oppression† must be understood because without understanding its rightful meaning it is â€Å"much misused, and sometimes not innocentlyâ € (Frye, p. 0) We must come to the understanding that men do face obstacles and barriers however they do not face the systematic oppression that women do as a result of their gender. Of course there are oppressed men living all around the world, but this oppression does not stem from the simple fact of their sex but many other factors such as socio-economic situation, sexual orientation, political situations etc†¦ Simply put, there are thousands, maybe millions of men around the world who are in no way oppressed, but not one single woman because her gender is the defining characteristic for her oppression.

Japan: stopping Nuclear Proliferation

The question of Nuclear Proliferation must be qualified as to whether or not it depends on the proliferation of nuclear weapons or on the proliferation of nuclear energy facilities. In response to the first type of nuclear proliferation, which is the proliferation of nuclear weapons, the only resolution available to Japan on this matter is to actively participate in the lobbying against nuclear proliferation in the United Nations Security Council. It has to take a definite stand and gain the support of other countries in preventing more countries from gaining the capability of manufacturing nuclear weapons. Peaceful negotiations with China and North Korea, which are the only nuclear weapon threats in the region, can also have the intended effect of coming at a peaceful resolution to this problem. With regard to the issue of nuclear capabilities, which may also lead to the manufacture of nuclear weapons, Japan must take a more direct role.Japan has a lot technologies and techniques at its disposal to aid those countries that resort to nuclear energy to solve their energy crisis. The financial grants that Japan is willing to grant may act as deterrent for nuclear proliferation and instead encourage these energy challenged nations to seek eco-friendly and non-threatening sources of energy to address their needs. 2. South Korea: Peaceful Resolution of the DPRK Nuclear Proliferation and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) ReformThe only way to talk peace is to lead through a peaceful example. The nearest nuclear threat to South Korea is North Korea which has been aggressively testing or declaring that it has nuclear capabilities. The continued efforts at peaceful negotiations are the only way to attain the non-violent resolution that South Korea wants. To threaten a country that may have nuclear capabilities can lead to disastrous results because any sign of aggression could lead to North Korea’s use of whatever nuclear devices that it could have at its disposal.South Korea must also be wary of accepting aid from any other parties that North Korea considers as threats of political enemies. While resort to the United Nations Security Council is indeed a viable option for South Korea, history has revealed that sanctions do not necessarily threaten North Korea. Instead North Korea has maintained that it is willing to use its nuclear weapons against anyone that tries to take any aggressive action against them. The key for South Korea is to conduct peaceful negotiations and adopt a maximum tolerance policy towards North Korea.3. China: The Further Regulation of SALW (Small Arms and Light Weapons) Internationally. China as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council has quite an advantage in convincing the other nations and members of the United Nations to take a more active role in the regulation of Small Arms and Light Weapons internationally. China must also take measures to prevent the manufacture and distribution of SA LW within its own borders as well; the unmonitored arms manufacturing that goes on within Chinese borders is one of the largest sources of these SALW.By cracking down on these small manufacturing plants, China can drastically reduce the volume of SALW that is being produced. It can also take better measures to enforce the policies and also take a more active role in monitoring its borders, especially those that are near the Eastern European Bloc, Russia and the Middle East. This may not be easy for China to do, however, due to the enormity of its country and the lack of funding to police its own borders and industries. 4. Philippines: support for measures to Decrease Human TraffickingThe problem of the Philippines is more economic than it is in Human Trafficking. The daily minimum wage of the Philippines is roughly US$ 4. Improving the living and working conditions of the people of the Philippines is one way of controlling the Trafficking in Humans that occurs within the country. Th e problem with the Philippines is that the economic situation is so poor that there is now a fine line between those who leave the country to find a better life voluntarily and those that have been trafficked. Improving the economic situation will greatly alleviate the situation for the Philippines. While more police measures and tourism regulations are options for the Philippines, the problem remains to be the funding that is needed for police measures and the loss of badly needed revenue caused by tourism regulations. 5. South Korea: Stop Human Trafficking in Asia South Korea is definitely in a better position to do something about the Human Trafficking problem in Asian because of the robust economy that South Korea has. From a geographical perspective, there is not much that South Korea can do to stop this problem.South Korea, however, has the technology and the funds that are necessary to help the economic status of most of its neighbors. Sending financial aid or investing more i n the Philippines will greatly help stop Human Trafficking because it will result in more jobs for the locals and raise the standards of living immensely. The only resolution for South Korea in this matter then lies in being able to encourage the growth of economic conditions within the area to deter the occurrence of Human tracking within the Asian Region. 6.Malaysia: Measures to eliminate International Terrorism International Terrorism is a problem that Malaysia may be too small to prevent. While there are arguably terrorist cells within the South East Asian region, the hotbed for these cells is not Malaysia but rather Indonesia. There is however a certain criteria for Malaysia that may help in taking measures to eliminate International Terrorism. The strong economy of Malaysia gives it the resources that it needs to fund any efforts that its neighbors are taking in order to address the issue. Its membership in the ASEAN is also another key since it can ask for aid from the other m embers and encourage them to take more action against these terrorist groups within the area. 7. Australia: United Nations Reform within the Security Council Australia is currently one of the emerging economies in the world and has gained more and more stature in the United Stations for its involvement in the Invasion of Iraq and the military support that it has been lending to the United States for its war on terror.Australia makes a perfect candidate as a permanent member of the Security Council because of its military strength and active support of the military mobilizations and also because of its geographical location. The alliances that it has with some of the other permanent members of the Security Council such as the United States and the United Kingdom will certainly provide it with a lot leverage when it lobbies for reform within the Security Council of the United Nations. 8. Indonesia: Energy Security for Developing Countries Indonesia possesses one of the world’s largest coasts. The energy production potential of Indonesia is enormous. Its geographical location and unique topography give it the potential to not only produce a lot cheap tidal energy and geothermal energy but recent findings have also located oil deposits on the Indonesian Archipelago. This means that if Indonesia is able to tap into these energy reserves it will be able to generate a lot of energy that it can sell to its neighbors, most of them developing countries such as the Philippines. 9. North Korea: supplementing Developing Countries with EnergyNorth Korea arguably has the nuclear technology needed to supplement the developing countries near it with the energy that they need in order to sustain economic growth. Instead of concentrating on the development of nuclear weapons, North Korea can greatly improve its economic status and the welfare of its citizens by shifting its nuclear production to the production of nuclear energy that it can sell to its neighbors. Its locati on on the Korean Peninsula gives it access to other countries on the continent and also to South Korea. All of the developing countries within its area can gain from the nuclear energy that North Korea can produce once it diverts the nuclear production to nuclear energy production. This will greatly benefit North Korea and improve its economy. It is an ideal set up for developing countries because it spares them the costs of manufacturing energy plants and is ideal for North Korea because it has the basic components that are necessary to initiate such a shift. 10. Singapore: Eliminating Illegal Drugs in the International Realm Singapore became the great nation that it is during the administration of Lee Kwan Yew.The somewhat dictatorial methods of Lee Kwan Yew put many things in order in Singapore and have made it one of the cleanest and most habitable countries in the world. The Singaporean model of government could serve as an international model that could be effective in eliminat ing the drug problems on an international level. The economic stability and the absence of illegal dealings in drugs that Singapore has been able to sustain over the years is an status that the international community can hope to attain by modeling their policies against the Singaporean model.11. Thailand: Support for Humanitarian mine action involvement Thailand is one of the most progressive countries within its immediate regional vicinity. The countries that neighbor Thailand are Cambodia and Vietnam. These countries are still riddled with thousands of unexploded and planted land mines. The problem for these countries however is that they lack the resources to begin the removal of these land mines. Thailand can help in this matter by providing these countries with the economic and technological assistance that they need in order to remove these mines.Alternatively, Thailand can also use indirect method by encouraging trade with these countries in an effort to revitalize their eco nomies and provide them with self-sustaining methods of funding that can help in the removal of these mines. 12. New Zealand: Support for the UNAIDS audits and education program New Zealand is relatively remote island country that has very little infrastructure as caused by the economic depression that it suffered a few years ago. It has begun focusing on a knowledge economy in an effort to revitalize its economy. It needs the support of the UNAIDS however to succeed in this endeavor. The key to resolving this problem lies in being able to reverse the â€Å"brain drain† problem thus assuring UNAIDS that whatever support is given to New Zealand will ultimately benefit the country and not just relocate to another place. 13. Vietnam: Achieving the MGDs The Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations are aimed at improving the overall welfare of the world by the year 2015. In order for Vietnam to achieve these goals, it will need plenty of financial assistance from foreign lending institutions that are willing to take debt-for-nature swaps or debt-for-equity swaps. For Vietnam to be able to achieve the MGD, it will need to promote economic growth in order to reduce unemployment and poverty. Investments in infrastructure and health care are also essential for Vietnam if it aims to achieve these goals. All of these however can only be achieved through the help of financial institutions and other countries that are willing to provide grants to Vietnam. It must also be important for Vietnam to secure these grants under favorable conditions so as not to unduly burden its fledgling economy.

The Paradox of Tragedy

The Paradox of Tragedy How is it possible that human beings can derive pleasure from unpleasant states? This is the question addressed by Hume in his essay On Tragedy, which lies at the heart of a long-standing philosophical discussion on tragedy. Take horror movies, for instance. Some people are terrified while watching them, or they don’t sleep for days. So why  are they doing it? Why stay in front of the screen for a horror movie? It is clear that sometimes we enjoy being spectators of tragedies. Although this may be an everyday observation, it is a surprising one. Indeed, the view of a tragedy typically produces disgust or awe in the viewer. But disgust and awe are unpleasant states. So how is it possible that we enjoy unpleasant states? It is by no chance that Hume devoted a whole essay to the topic. The rise of aesthetics in his time took place side by side with a revival of a fascination for horror. The issue had already kept busy a number of ancient philosophers. Here is, for example, what t he Roman poet Lucretius and British philosopher Thomas Hobbes had to say on it. What joy it is, when out at sea the stormwinds are lashing the waters, to gaze from the shore at the heavy stress some other man is enduring! Not that anyones afflictions are in themselves a source of delight; but to realize from what troubles you yourself are free is joy indeed. Lucretius, On the Nature of the Universe, Book II.From what passion proceedeth it, that men take pleasure to behold from the shore the danger of them that are at sea in a tempest, or in fight, or from a safe castle to behold two armies charge one another in the field? It is certainly in the whole sum joy. else men would never flock to such a spectacle. Nevertheless there is in it both joy and grief. For as there is novelty and remembrance of [ones] own security present, which is delight; so is there also pity, which is grief But the delight is so far predominant, that men usually are content in such a case to be spectators of the misery of their friends. Hobbes, Elements of Law, 9.19.So, how to solve the par adox? More Pleasure Than Pain One first attempt, pretty obvious, consists in claiming that the pleasures involved in any spectacle of tragedy outweigh the pains. Of course I’m suffering while watching a horror movie; but that thrill, that excitement that accompanies the experience is totally worth the travail. After all, one could say, the most delectable pleasures all come with some sacrifice; in this circumstance, the sacrifice is to be horrified. On the other hand, it seems that some people do not find particular pleasure in watching horror movies. If there is any pleasure at all, it’s the pleasure of being in pain. How can that be? Pain as Catharsis A second possible approach sees in the quest for pain an attempt to find a catharsis, that is a form of liberation, from those negative emotions. It is by inflicting upon ourselves some form of punishment that we find relief from those negative emotions and feelings that we have experienced. This is, in the end, an ancient interpretation of the power and relevance of tragedy, as that form of entertainment that is quintessential to elevate our spirits by allowing them to surpass our traumas. Pain is, Sometimes, Fun Yet another, third, approach to the paradox of horror comes from philosopher  Berys  Gaut. According to him, to be in awe or in pain, to suffer, can in some circumstances be sources of enjoyment. That is, the way to pleasure is pain. In this perspective, pleasure and pain are not really opposites: they may be two sides of the very same coin. This is because what’s bad in a tragedy is not the sensation, but the scene that elicits such sensation. Such a scene is connected to a horrific emotion, and this, in turn, elicits a sensation that we find in the end pleasurable.Whether Gaut’s ingenious proposal got it right is questionable, but the paradox of horror certainly remains one of the most entertaining subjects in philosophy.

Daily Fuel How quiet leadership makes a louder impact

Daily Fuel How quiet leadership makes a louder impact The desire for power is a common one, but once you obtain it, the real test begins. Both the public and private sectors are full of leaders more focused on their own personal brand than the impact they are making. Former Bush Administration official and Detroit Regional Chamber CEO Sandy Baruah explains what separates the best leaders from the show horses, but his message can apply to even the smallest of jobs. Answering the questions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Answering the questions - Essay Example t even though the tree is dead from the inside and it will only be a matter of time before the leaves fall out and reveal the real nature of the tree (Brown 234). While Christian doctrine offers pardon from sins through the acceptance of Jesus Christ as our savior, secular humanists believe that humans are basically noble and have no need to ask for forgiveness from anyone for their â€Å"sins†. Thus secular humanists cannot discard their guilt and once a human compiles too much guilt, then overtime he becomes accustomed to these feelings of guilt and the signals from the conscience and has no trouble behaving sinfully and immorally (Brown 233-238). Almost all the aspects of the Christian doctrine comply with humanist world views, the doctrine teaches about respect for fellow human beings, sanctity through the unity of a man & woman, staying truthful, and not doing anything that is sinful in nature according to the Bible. More and Erasmus were some of the greatest preachers of Christian Humanism and were considered exceedingly moral and intelligent. Being close friends, More and Erasmus had high respect for one another, Erasmus even talked about More’s sole being â€Å"purer than snow†. While their outlook and views about Christian humanism were analogous, their methods were different in the sense that More was much more radical than Erasmus. (Hauerwas and Wells 142) The Pope was and is a prominent figure all over the world, and believed to be the foremost religious authority and the most righteous man. So when Martin Luther advertised several gross allegations against the Pope and the Church’s officials in his 95 Theses; this immediately gained popularity, as do many scandals in the present day. (Graham 118-119) In less than 2 weeks, the popularity 95 theses had covered all of Germany and within 60 days the publicity reached all over Europe; mostly through word-of-mouth publicity and the scandalous nature of the texts. Changes Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Changes - Essay Example Fertility decline and population aging will have a dramatic effect on society and if these problems are nor addressed will only become more severe in the future. The increase in age population will also increase the population ratio to population dependency. There will be problems with the long term care of the elderly. The costs of that dependency is born by the Government and ultimately by a society through taxes in an ever diminishing workforce due to a decline in fertility. Of course a decline in the birthrate will leave a short fall in all forms of employment both professional and menial. There will definitely be a labor shortage. The decline in birthrate effects the living arrangements of the elderly. There are more elderly living alone and the strong family support that is prevalent in most societies will weaken. With less family to help , the elderly persons financial position will also weaken and lead to serious financial difficulties. Immigration has always been one of the answers to labor shortage throughout the world. â€Å"Large-Scale Immigration is Suggested as a Solution to Declining Workforces in Western Nations.†(Wikipedia.) This alone will not solve the problem and major changed to government policies will be needed to buck the trend of low fertility. The distance between the working life and family life will be needed to be brought closer together to encourage families to have more children. Issues such as child care subsidies and parental work policies taking in flexible work hours and parental leave need to be looked at. Quality and affordable childcare will need to be provided. Although Government policies to reverse the trend of low birthrate and the consequent aging population will be slow and the benefits will not be seen for many years but these issues need to be addressed now in Germany and Italy to ensure a fruitful future for both

None Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

None - Assignment Example Further to this, the prompt gives other fallacious statements of the reasons why individual and other Americans should own guns. For instance, it cites the border threats posed by immigrants from Latin America and other forms of gangs. It argues that the borders have become porous hence allowing job seekers, al-Qaida agents, as well as other terrorist organizations. Moreover, it asserts that the border has increased insecurity by allowing individual committing criminal activities such as robbery, kidnapping, murder, rape among others (Rick 17). Therefore, the prompt believes that owning a gun is the only solution towards the increased insecurity in the US specifically in the southern border. There are many fallacies that are emanating from the above prompt. For instance, many US citizens believe that owning a gun can be the only solution to their insecurity. This is not the case because guns do not ensure security, but are for shooting and killing (Lunger 67). Owning a gun does not ensure the security, but threatens and intimidate those living around and who dont own. In many cases, people have been killed even when they have guns. For instance, law enforcement agents have been killed when in patrol through being ambushed (Goss and Cook 133). This is an indication that owning or possessing a gun does not guarantee the security. There are many ways citizens can protect themselves other than owning a gun. Secondly, the prompt asserts that the porous US borders more so in the south have led to insecurity by allowing immigrants. This is a fallacy; not all illegal immigrants are security threats. There are many who have been of help to the US government by offering labor in areas where citizens cannot reach (Goss and Cook 133). Some immigrants are in US legally hence should not be viewed as illegal immigrants. Instead, they should be viewed as people who can contribute positively to the US economy. Lastly, there are a number of cases when the gun owners

Jocasta: Queen Of Thebes

Jocasta: Queen Of Thebes Jocasta: Unacknowledged Misunderstood Surrounded by powerful and royal men, left in the background as if she; Jocasta Queen of Thebes was not important. In Sophocles play Oedipus the King, Queen Jocasta endures a tragic fate of her own. Queen Jocasta is not only imperative to the aiding of the story, but gives an more in depth look into Sophocles tragedy. To many people Oedipus is deemed as tragic individual within the play, but not only he should be focused on, Jocasta has encountered just as many tragedies if not more. She receives news about the murder of her husband king Laius, marries her son Oedipus and commits suicide when she finds out the prophecy from oracle has come true. Many people know the story of Oedipus the king, Oedipus who is prophesized to murder his father and marry his mother. At birth Oedipus is taken up to the mountains with his feet bonded to die, to protect the king and queen from the prophecy of the oracle. Perhaps if the story where told in Jocastas point of view, then readers would understand the amount of devastations she has really suffered. Readers will see that more then anything else; Jocasta is an innocent a victim of circumstances. Pregnant with her first child, Jocasta receives the prophecy from the oracle of Delphi that if she bores a son, he will kill the king and marry her. What would any young and impressionable mother do in that situation; but listen to the wise words of her husband and king. King Laius tells her that they must get rid of the baby. â€Å"I am fifteen and afraid to resist and tell myself it is my husbands right; the gods decree a wife obey her spouse (Jocasta)†. Jocasta, not much of a woman yet, can not do anything more then listen to her husband. She must give up her only child, although it is not what she wants to do, she must because it is her only option. â€Å"The only choice a woman has is that she wed accepting what the gods and men decree (Jocasta)†.Women in Jocastas time had no say no say in thing at all. All decisions were made by the men in their lives, their fathers, husbands and the gods. Women could not complain about the decision made, they could only accept th e decision and live with them. In Ruth F. Eisenbergs â€Å"Jocasta†, Sophocles play is told in Jocastas point of view. Eisenberg retells the story by giving a deeper insight on the struggles Jocasta faced as the young wife of Laius and also as the Queen of Thebes. â€Å"The baby cries, and Laius turns away. He summons a servant and orders me to hand my baby over, threatening me when I cry. The king will keep his own hands clean (Jocasta)†. Young and naive Jocasta must do what she is told by her husband or like Oedipus he might get rid of her. Jocasta could not question the great King Laius, she was not his equal. She was considered below him, like all the women other in Thebes during that time. Secondly, she fell in love with the man that solved the riddle of the sphinx, which happened to be her own son, Oedipus, who she has four children with. After many years of an unbearable and loveless marriage, Jocasta finally finds a man that she truly and deeply cares about. He is everything a woman would want smart, a good leader and loving. â€Å"He was at first my headstrong bull, but now he is what a man, a king, should be. Our love has brought to me the joy that I missed when I was young and thought Id never know (Jocasta)†. Her first marriage was so horrible she never though she would find real love. She is really happy with the man that her second husband is, he was everything King Laius was not. Her second husband gives her four beautiful children, children who she thought she would never have again. Two wonderful daughters and two strong sons, the four children she thought she would never have to give up. Everything was going perfect for Oedipus and Jocasta until the land started to come be dry and would not bare any crops. The people of Thebes began to suffer greatly and Oedipus decides to consult the oracle. Consequently, she finds out that everything oracle had predicted in fact did come true. A messenger from Corinth comes to tell Oedipus about the death of his alleged father Polybus, and asks him to come back to Corinth as the new king. Oedipus refuses because he fears he oracles prophecy will come true. The messenger reassures him that Merope his alleged mother did not have any children, and Oedipus was not their real son. Queen begged Oedipus not to continue to question the messenger but he does not listen. â€Å"In the name of the gods, no! If you havesome concern for your own life, then stop! Do not keep investigating this I will suffer-that will be enough (Sophocles)†. Queen no realizes that the prophecy may have actually come true, she tries to protect Oedipus form the truth but he does not listen to her.The messenger goes on to say that in fact Oedipus is the son of King Laius and Queen Jocasta. Queen Jocasta just as shocked as Oedipus if not more, is overwhelmed with as tonishment and pity. â€Å"I cant believe. I cant believe. Oh God. He is my son. Ive loved my son but not as mothers should, but in my bed, in me. All that I loved most, his youth that made our love the summer sun, wrong, all wrong. Vile(Jocasta).† Jocasta is so overwhelmed with guilt, shame and pity. After loveless years of marriage to find someone she really loved and to find out that he is her own son was extremely appalling to Jocasta. Jocasta realizes she was cursed form the day she married King Laius and that it is his entire fault, and because of him she is getting punished. Jocasta ashamed and disgusted cures the god and goddess that she prayed to her whole life. With the truth of the oracle being too much to bear, she could no longer live another day and commits suicide. Victimized by the gods and by her first husband, Jocasta was cursed from the day she was born. Her fate was already decided for her and there was no way around it. Everything she every loved was a cu rse, the five children she more were all curses destined to cause her deep pain. Jocasta Queen of Thebes was surrounded by powerful and royal men, and was left in the background as if she was not important. Queen Jocasta was not only imperative to the aiding of the story, but she gave a more in depth look into Sophocles tragedy. Jocasta should also be as a tragic hero, she had encountered many tragedies. After receiving news about the murder of her husband king Laius, she marries her own son; which was all too much for Jocasta to bear thus prompting her to commit suicide. Consequently, now that the story has been told from Jocastas point of view, readers will have a better understanding of the devastation that Jocasta has endure. Jocasta is in fact really the victim in the play; she is a victim of circumstance and truly has suffered as a result. Works Cited â€Å"Jocasta.† https://teacherweb.com/FL/SAS/Cabrera/Jocasta.pdf. Unzipped :: Free Essay Writer

Unzipped In the expository text Unzipped- everything teenagers want to know about love, sex and each other, Bronwyn Donaghy has written about the facts and consequences of teenage sex. By doing so she has presented us with her old fashioned ideologies and her strong ‘anti-teenage-sex’ values and attitudes. As the audience Donaghy has tried to scare us into believing and following these attitudes, which are very evident throughout the entire text. Virginity and abstinence is the way to go. This text is targeted at young youths who are curious and want to explore their sexuality and their parents who Donaghy thinks should be open and willing to educate their children on the subject. In order to do this she has employed the use of three different writing styles: These being narrative, expository and real life accounts. Between chapters and further the different sexual topics, Donaghy has split the information up by an ongoing fictional story, which runs through the entire book. It is a narrative story about two inquisitive and curious adolescent teenagers who fall in love and start to get ‘full on’ but then decide against the idea of sex as it is simply too complicated. Donaghy has done this by using very ‘down to earth’ language that she thinks teenagers can relate to and a simplistic story line. However by trying to relate to teenagers at what she perceives is their level in my opinion gives the story very little realism in regards to reality as she simply cant ‘pull it off’. The story is made to almost look superficial. Within the story it is made very clear that abstinence is the way to go, reflect Donaghy’s ideologies. As the writer she does not even try to hide this attitude of hers and at one stage, through Ben’s mum is able to vocalise th is: ‘ Love is a wonderful thing†¦. Sex on the other hand, can be very dangerous in the hands of the young and inexperienced.’ She then goes on to say: I sincerely hope you wont’. This is in relation to Ben and Lucy’s sex life. By creating this story Donaghy tries to manipulate us as the audience to accept these ideas and her values as being right. To further shape our response towards this very strong attitude Lucy and Ben adhered to Ben’s mum’s opinion and further Donaghy’s ideologies. She developed these characters in order to express her perception of what teenage relationships should be like in her eyes.
